Now
producing over 4,000,000 tortillas weekly, Albuquerque
Tortilla Company, Inc., had a modest beginning. The
barely-readable signage marked their first location,
opened in 1987.

Our
Story
From Our Kitchen . . . To
Your Table!
lbuquerque
Tortilla Company, Inc., started out with a secret recipe and
a dream. With a tiny building, a used tortilla machine, and
eight employees, the family business was underway.
The
company began as a small operation making flour tortillas.
Back door sales and satisfied restaurant customers helped
the company quickly outgrow its first location in 1990. The
expansion included the addition of a new corn tortilla line,
and several additional employees. Because the quality of the
tortillas was so good, production was soon running day and
night in the new building. The small wholesale-to-the-public
store was often filled with customers snatching up the warm,
freshly-made tortillas.
Since
that first move, Albuquerque Tortilla Company has outgrown
many locations, and now occupies 105,000 square feet of space.
Together with the help of state-of-the-art tortilla making
machinery, Albuquerque Tortilla Company's 200 employees are
turning out 3,000,000 flour tortillas and 1,000,000 corn tortillas
weekly. Many of these tortillas are then distributed by the
company's seven semi trailers throughout the Southwest and
the West Coast. Thirteen wholesale outlets serve local caterers
and restaurants who prefer to pick up their own tortillas
at a wholesale discount.
Nobody
can compare with Albuquerque Tortilla Company's "Homestyle"
brand of tortillas. The company, adamant in giving the customer
what they want, also manufactures corn tortillas. Vegetable
Products, Inc., of Salem New Mexico, supplies the company
with frozen Hatch green chile and freshly ground spices used
in the company's chile rellenos and tamales.

No
matter how large or small the company was, the goal
was always the same: make the freshest, most delicious
Mexican foods possible. The family-owned and operated
company has succeeded in that goal by using only the
best ingredients and producing their foods in a clean,
quality-controlled environment.

The
Albuquerque Tortilla Company family are native New Mexicans,
and feel the support they have received from the city and
its citizens have been an important part in making their company
an Albuquerque success story. Now located at 4300 Alexander
Blvd. NE, the company is able to turn out 4,000,000 tortillas
a week. The corn tortilla line has been refined and the foods
line has expanded to include tostada chips, taquitos, chicharrones,
and more, all USDA inspected. The red chile line continues
to grow, and the famous green chile that put New Mexico on
the map is brought into Albuquerque from the Hatch/Salem area
weekly.
No,
we aren't just a tortilla company any more. Albuquerque Tortilla
Company, Inc, is one of the most modern Mexican food manufacturers
around. But one thing doesn't change -- roots. Be it eight
employees or 200, 1300 square feet or 105,000, the roots of
quality and hard work remain the same.
